Why your bag might worth more than you think

When luxury handbag reseller Baghunter.com released their research study on the investment value of the Hermes Birkin bag, TIME magazine came out with an eye-catching headline, ‘Why the Hermes Birkin Bag is a Better Investment Than Gold.’ Indeed, the Baghunter study revealed that compared to the worth of the S&P 500 and gold, Birkin bags were not only a less volatile market in which to invest, but that the Birkin bag also a purchase that would likely continue to increase in value over time. This article claimed that this bag, named after the model Jane Birkin, had a value increase of over 500% in the last 35 years, and the value was projected to continue to increase in the next 10 years. While it isn’t advisable to take a handbag resale website’s financial advice when it tell you to buy a handbag, this study got our attention.

Now, Baghunter.com released a new study on the investment value of Chanel handbags, finding them to be similarly good investment pieces. The new article, ‘Chanel Bag Values Research Study’, focused on the timeless Medium Classic Flap Bag and its rise in value over the course of the last 60 years.

The oldest handbag in Chanel’s collection, the Medium Classic Flap Bag sold for $220 when it was released in 1955; by 1990 it sold for $1,150. The next ten years saw the greatest increase in value, however, with the price of the bag in May of 2016 resting at the lofty price of $4,900. Nearly $3,000 of the current value of the bag is not due to the falling value of money, but rather its growing value among consumers.

In light of these recent studies, we decided to take a look at the bags we think make the best investment pieces, from the classic Hermes Birkin to newer bags that earn their value through their versatility and durability.
